TIMBER

structures and carpentry.

Timber in Byron Bay & the Northern Rivers

Decks, screens, pergolas and bench seating built to sit in the weather down here and still look right in ten years. Hardwood, because nothing else survives this coast without a maintenance habit nobody keeps up.

Hardwood, fanned to a curve

A curved bench and planter on a suburban pool garden, with the boards fanned around the radius rather than mitred into a corner. It is more work to set out and it is the reason the shape reads as deliberate instead of as a straight bench that ran out of room.

How we work

Timber is what makes an outdoor space feel like a room. A screen turns an exposed corner into a private one, a pergola puts shade over the walk between the house and the pool, and a built in bench means nobody has to carry furniture out to use the garden.

We build in hardwood and detail for movement, because timber on this coast expands and contracts through the year whatever you do to it. Fixings are stainless or hot dipped near the water. Everything is set to weather to a grey silver rather than to need oiling twice a year forever, unless you want the oiled look and are honest about keeping it up.

Questions we get asked

What timber should I use for a deck in Byron Bay?
A durable class 1 or 2 Australian hardwood. Spotted gum, blackbutt and ironbark all perform here. Merbau is common and cheaper but bleeds tannin badly onto pale paving for the first year. Whatever the species, the fixings matter as much as the boards within sight of the water.
Do I have to oil a hardwood deck?
Only if you want it to stay honey coloured. Left alone, hardwood weathers to a silver grey and loses nothing structurally. Oiling is a look, and it is a look that needs redoing every year or two down here. We are happy either way, we just want you to choose it knowingly.
Can you build a screen to hide a neighbour or a pool pump?
Yes, and it is one of the most common jobs we get asked for. Batten spacing is the whole decision: tight enough to screen from the angle you actually look from, open enough that it does not read as a fence or catch wind like a sail.
