PAVING

pathways and concrete.

Paving in Byron Bay & the Northern Rivers

A paved surface is only as good as what is under it. Everything we lay goes on a compacted base with the right bedding and the right joint, because paving that moves is not a finish problem, it is a base problem.

Three hundred square metres

Sharpes Beach carpark at Skennars Head was three hundred square metres of concrete and paving for Ballina Shire Council. A carpark on a headland takes salt every day of the year and a full load of traffic every weekend, so the base did the work and the surface only had to stay put. Concrete where the cars run, pavers where people walk, and nothing on the job that needs painting or sealing to survive.

How we work

We lay sandstone and limestone crazy paving, cut stone, granite setts, pavers, stepping stones and plain concrete across Byron Bay, Suffolk Park, Bangalow, Lennox Head, Brunswick Heads, Ballina and the wider Northern Rivers. Crisp grout against green lawn is what makes an entrance read, so we take the joints seriously and we seal where the surface needs the protection.

Salt air eats cheap fixings and cheap sealers. Close to the beach we choose materials that weather to a finish rather than needing one, which is why so much of our work is stone, hardwood and corten rather than anything painted.

Questions we get asked

What is crazy paving and why is it used so much around Byron?
Crazy paving is irregular stone laid in a jigsaw pattern with a grouted joint. It suits this area because the stone is local, it handles heat and salt without fading, and the irregular pattern hides the settlement that a rigid grid would show. Sandstone and limestone are the two we lay most.
How long does new paving take to walk on?
Bedded and grouted stone is normally walkable the next day and ready for furniture within about three days. Poured concrete takes longer, around seven days before heavy use. Wet weather extends both, and we would rather wait than hand over a surface that has not cured.
Will paving crack or move?
Not if the base is right. Movement comes from an under compacted base, no edge restraint, or water running under the surface with nowhere to go. All three are decided before the first stone is laid, which is why we do our own excavation.
